Hello Ai Sewing fans!
I'm here with the March edition of Tuesday Threads with Karen... using the pretty Art Impressions Shop Hop fabrics designed by Bonnie Krebs, available through Henry Glass Co.
I have a needle case to share with you today! Both my Mother & Grandmother used to have these in their sewing rooms to keep all of their handsewing needles and pins organized, so I thought I'd make one for myself. Here's what I started with:
I used my rotary cutter to cut two 8" x 12" pieces of fabric for the base, and one 6" x 12" piece to use as a pocket. I had a matching piece of felt that I cut down to 6" x 10" and some bias binding tape.I cut a piece of Heat n Bond high loft Fusible Fleece from Therm O Web slightly larger than my base pieces, and sandwiched it between the two.
I used my sewing machine to quilt the three layers together, and wanted to share my hi-tech method of how I kept my stitching lines straight! I put a piece of masking tape on the diagonal, and sewed along the edge, then I moved it over repeatedly until the entire piece was quilted.
I absolutely love the effect! The Heat n Bond fleece is only about 1/8" thick - perfect for this project.
I finished off the top edge of the pocket, then stitched it down to the base.
On the outside of the needle case, I used Heat n Bond Lite iron-on adhesive to attach two semi circles of contrasting fabric. I used a zigzag stitch around them to finish the edges.
I used my machine to sew the bias binding around the edges (and taught myself how to mitre the corners!). I didn't trust my ability to neatly topstitch the binding on the flip side... so I used a blind stitch to finish it by hand. Then I centered the piece of felt on the inside, and stitched it down the center - this created the fold in the case. I added a button and loop closure, and it was done! This is a great little project that helps to keep your supplies organized, and makes a cute addition to your sewing room. I'll see you next month with another sewing project!
