Art Impressions Blog: Watercolor Weekend 7-2-2022

Hello Ai fans!

It's a Watercolor Weekend here on the blog and that means you'll be seeing some wonderful watercolor inspiration for our fabulous Design Team.

These three artists never disappoint.
We're beginning our weekend with a gorgeous pair of cards from Karen.

I ended up painting two of the same cards this week. I started on Ranger watercolour paper, as I wanted the bright white base, and wasn't happy with how the colour was bleeding when I added water. So I switched over to Canson XL Watercolour paper and began again. I persevered with both paintings - and ended up being quite happy with each of them!

I stamped the 5362 - WC Gazebo Set image in the new #N79, and then die cut the coordinating die from masking paper - which I placed over the image. Using the tiny foliage from 5009 - WC Mini Flower Set and #249, I stamped in the foliage behind the railings. Then with the lavendar stamp and #565, I added the flowers on top. To create the hillsides, I used the bushes from 55372 - WC Mini Foliage in #177, stamping them over the mask, and then pulled out the colour with a damp brush. I painted in the suggestion of a sky with #493, and then removed the mask.

The roses from 5258 - WC Flower Set 4 were stamped on either side using #676. Greenery from 5126 - WC Foliage Set 4 in #249 was stamped around them, and the vines from the same set were stamped up and around one of the posts, and spilling over the roof line. The tiny flowers from 5009 were added to create little clusters of flowers along the vine in #606. I used the 5018 - WC Cobblestone Set to add the stones out front in #N79. Shades of #969 were painted on the roof, and as the wood floor, and I used a fine marker to suggest wood shakes and planks. #565 was painted around the interior of the gazebo to add the shadows, and under all the eaves and woodwork. The tiny grass from 5372 was stamped in #177 around the gazebo and stones, and then the colour was used as a wash to paint in the grass. I added some N79 to the white areas of the sky to add some shape to the clouds. The images were die cut using the 5463 Slimline Dies, and the sentiment is from the Exclusive Hydrangea set. I added a little bling to finish them off!

I do love a patriotic card and with Independence Day coming up, I had to make a card with the good ole red, white and blue. Kendra Krebs from Art Impressions did a fantastic tutorial on Facebook recently with one pot and she inspired me to make this card. Hope you like it and give it a try!

Start by stamping the middle pot from the 4870 Ornate Containers inked in Tombow 565. Make a mask, cover it then stamp the other two pots from the same set inked in the 565. Stamp the birds from the 4866 Bird Bath Set inked in 565 then 969 using the stamp positioner. Color the pots with Tombow 856 and Marvy LePlume II #86 African Violet. I used it this time because it seems to be a more true blue than purple like the Tombows. The stars are glued on and they are from Buttons Galore and More. The flag is a stamp my good friend Connie Myers gave me but not sure which company made it. Stamp the grass from the 4051 Foliage Set 1 set inked in 249 inside the middle pot. Then stamp the leaves from the 5418 Bible Foliage Set 2 inked in 177 inside the pot. The flowers are from the 4052 Flower Set inked in the Marvy #86. The pot leaning over has foliage from the 4051 Foliage Set 1 inside it inked in 249. The flowers are from the 4052 Flower Set inked in 856. The white centers are painted using the Dr PH Martin's bleed proof paint and a stylus. Stamp the leaves from the 5418 Bible Set inked in 158 in the other pot. Stamp the flowers from the 5474 Flower Set 5 inked in 856 and 177. Color the sky with the #86. Use the two largest 5063 Rectangle dies to make a frame. Hope you all have a wonderful 4th of July!

Hi Watercolor Fans! Welcome Back. This weekend I was inspired to create a silhouette scene by the great Michelle Hoskins. I thought it looked fun and easy, and it didn’t disappoint.

I started out by taping down my watercolor paper and creating a square opening mask with some post-it tape. I inked the posts up with 025 Black and stamped it in the middle-ish of the bottom of the square. I then inked up the bird, also with black and, using my positioner, stamped it on top of the post. I added more black from my palette. In order to get a nice dark black, you need to layer the black. Let each layer dry before adding the next layer.

I covered the bird and posts with post-it masking tape and started adding clean water to the background. By taping down the paper it will help with the curling. I added some colors to my palette, picked up color and added it to the water. I added many layers. If you don’t like what you did, you can pull color up, add more, add clean water to create blooms. So many things you can do to create something you are happy with. Just play!

Once the sky was complete, I added some colors into the water and some black in the background to look like trees. Once it was all dry, I added some bleed proof white to the white caps on the waves. I also watered some down and pulled them away from where the sun would be to look like beams of light (not sure if that was accomplished, but I like it 😊). I inked the small birds up and stamped them into the top left corner.

The most satisfying part, pulling off the masks. Once that was done, I signed and dated my work. I cut it out with the rectangle stitched die to look like a polaroid picture. This way you can put any sentiment on it and send it on it’s way!
