Adirondack Chairs by the Falls by Guest Designer Dawn Wagner

 Celebration Hi!

I return for another round of painting fun!

America has its 250th Anniversary this 4th of July. I decided to create a celebration scene with the June Throwback. I used the following sets: 6234-Woodland Falls Throwback, 6236-Rocky Falls, 6225- Adirondack Chairs, 5009-Mini Flowers, 5373-Lg Tree Set(leaves only), 4051-Foliage and 5476- Foliage 5. I used Canson watercolor paper, #4 and #0 brushes, Tombow colors 969, 565, 177, 158, 133, 856, 990, 992, 526 and N35. TwinTone colors chocolate, Prussian blue, emerald green, blue and navy. I also used KingArt 132-Blue, and Dr. Ph Martin’s Bleed Proof White. I inked the woodland falls stamp with 969 and 565 in the areas I was going to use for my scene. I did not use the entire scene because I wanted to add the lower falls to make the waterfall cascade longer. I used a stamp positioner to add the lower falls to the scene. I penciled in rocks on the left by the tree to complete the picture. Using the #4 brush with only water, I started pulling color from where I thought the darkest shadows of the rocks would be. I used N35 fine tip to deepen the darkest shadows and then used multiple color and many layers to the rocks to give them a more realistic look. I pulled color from the lines of the tree and went back in with the chocolate TwinTone to darken certain areas. I used the leaves from the tree set to make the background leaves and the leaves from 6234 for the darker foreground areas. I added the Adirondack chairs to the bottom of the waterfall using 969 and 565. I did stamp off once to lighten them up a bit. I added the American Flag to them for a patriotic look. I added some grasses and mini flowers under the tree and around some of the rocks. I used multiple blue colors in the waterfall to create some depth and flow appearance. I used Ph Martin’s to add some “churning” of the water at the bottom of each cascade, and some running down the waterfall. I was thinking the scene looked incomplete with the chasers just sort of floating in space there, so I added a shoreline and some sand to ground them into the scene. Sometimes I have a hard time trying to figure out just how to include and ground things into the project. That’s when I thought I needed to add some foliage and flowers by the chairs to complete the look. Okay, to be honest, I really wanted fireworks above the waterfall, that was my intent, but I was not confident enough to add them without messing up the rest of the scene. I will practice those at a later time. Thank you for following along and hope you had a great 4th of July!

Watercolor Lighthouse by Dawn Wagner

 Lighthouse Hello!

I am honored to be a substitute guest designer. You know when you were in school and had a substitute teacher, some were good, some not so good. Hopefully I tempt your creativity and give you a reason to try something new. I created a lighthouse scene for a Father’s Day card.

I used the following sets: 5465-Cliffs, 5466-Lighthouse, 5473- Seagull and a small grass from the foliage set, 4051. I used Canson watercolor paper, #4 and #0 brushes, Tombow colors 969, 565, 757, 990, N35, 177, 403 and 555, TwinTone colors chocolate, gray, Prussian blue, light blue, navy and turquoise blue, KingArt 132 - Blue, and a Zig Millennium Pure Black M5-005 micron-like pen for fine details. I inked the left facing cliff with 969 first, then 565. I did not stamp off as I wanted a bolder appearance. For the right facing cliff, I only inked the part I needed to make the cliff look complete using a stamp positioner. I then inked the lighthouse the same way and placed on the cliff. I wet my brush and started pulling the color out of the lines to begin the shading process. Using 757, I started adding color to the lighthouse very lightly, working from the outside toward the middle. I continued to add layers of the same color to get the effect I was looking for. I pulled the color out of the bottom only of the rocks and used a #0 brush to add 969 to the bottom and dragged upward to make the rocks look three dimensional and rounded. I used 757 to paint the bricks leaving some white space. I used 990 for the door and to fill in between the rocks. I used 990 on the small building and N35 lightly for the roof. I used the chocolate TwinTone to draw vertical lines on the door and used the gray TwinTone to draw roof lines. I used the Zig micron pen to draw in the windows and added minor shading for the bricks. I used 177 for the grassy areas. I added small grass from 4051. The cliffs used almost all colors except 757. I made sure the darkest parts of the cliffs were the parts where the rocks appeared to be stacked. I tried to leave some light parts with no color to create the highlights of the cliff side. For the water, I used a very light layer of 565 as the base of the water. I then added different TwinTone blues to different areas at the base of the rocks. I used just a wet brush and dragged the color out to create the depth of the water. I continued this process until I achieved the water I was looking for. I used 969 very lightly to create the reflection and the appearance of rocks in the water. I added the seagulls using 565, stamping off to make one set lighter than the other. I used KingArt 132 Blue for the rolling sky surrounding the lighthouse. I used 555 as the super light base for the rest of the sky. I went back through with TwinTones to make the shadows darker where needed. I used a Renke die cut for the best fit for the lighthouse, and color coordinated backgrounds for the card.

Thank you kindly for tuning in and get happy creating!

The Next Holiday is on It's Way...

...and it is one of my FAVES!!! I love Valentines Day! I love the colors, I love the candy hearts and I LOVE the Art Impressions Valentots! I stamped this little cutie with black Stazon onto watercolor paper. Then, I used STAEDTLER watercolor crayons to color this little darling in! I scribbled some of the crayon onto scrap paper and then I used a water brush to liquefy the color and painted her in! I added some glitter to the pom pom on her cap and here is my creation!
Where did the darling roses come from you ask... well... I MADE THEM!!! here is how! I used a push mold from STAEDTLER and some FIMO effects clay. I pushed the clay into the mold, removed it and here is my flower! The best part? I can make as many as I wan...in any color I want and I can make a whole cookie sheet of them in like 20 minutes! If you done want to by alot of clay... you can always so what i did and that is to add some extra color for dimension by scraping some STAEDTLER karat soft pastel chalks into a little pike and brushing the color onto the clay before baking it! It is a great effect and adds dimension and character super fast! I adhered them to my card with glue dots! easy peasy! Thanks so much for popping in and be sure to keep watching this page for more fun creations!
